Step two of the under painting! I refine the image further, adding some details, but still keeping with a large brush to really get some texture and motion.

Here’s where the game gets interesting.

Day five, and I start to lay down my monochrome under painting. It’s pretty lose, as this is basically a new sketch. I tried to really just pin down the basic shapes and values with out getting too bogged down by detail. These early stages also help to add texture. I use a large brush, so I get some nice sweeps which will stay there until the end.

I lightened, brightened and warmed up pretty much everything here.

Day three!

Taking that color further. Here I change the values involved, making the background lighter and the midground darker. Still not too happy.

Day Two!

This is where I took the sketch, put it in Photoshop, and started to play with some colors. Don’t worry, it starts to get better in a bit.

This was my first sketch, after some thumbnails that are somewhere around here. It was done with a woodless graphite pencil in about an hour or two. I did it pretty quick, thinking it was a draft. As it turned out, I took it way to far.
